What is ICPSR?

ICPSR is the world's largest archive of behavioral and social science research data. The VCU Libraries membership in ICPSR enables faculty, students, and staff to download and analyze data relevant to:

  • criminal justice, economics, education, gerontology
  • immigration, health care, LGBT health, mental health
  • political science, psychology, social work, sociology
  • substance abuse, terrorism, and more.

To analyze ICPSR data you need statistical software e.g., SASSPSS, or STATA. All can be downloaded free of charge from VCU Technology Services, which also offers free statistical consulting (by appointment). See LearnIT for current training opportunities on.SAS and SPSS


NOTE: Many ICPSR datasets are SDA enabled, meaning you can Analyze Data Online without SAS, SPSS, or Stata! 

How can I access ICPSR data?

From VCU Libraries Databases A-Z List,  select "I;" scroll down to ICPSR

Before you can download a data set, you will be prompted to create a MyData Account. This account serves as a secondary method of membership authentication and provides some personalization options. You must use a valid VCU e-mail address as your user ID ( or
