HandBrake is a open-source tool, built by volunteers, for converting video from nearly any format to a selection of modern, widely supported codecs.
MediaInfo
A free, cross-platform, program for identifying your video codec, bitrate, framerate, duration, aspect ratio, pixel dimension, audio samplerate and more. Because this is freeware (not open source) you will need to decline the installation of additional, unwanted, software.

Creative Technologies and Scholarship (The Workshop), VCU Libraries
The Workshop, in the James Branch Cabell Library, provides to the VCU Community, self-service, cross-platform video editing stations with a wide variety of capture and export options. MCR, in the Health Sciences Library, provides to the VCU Community, a self-service cross-platform facility for collaborative study, multimedia computing, and making presentation materials.

Adobe Creative Cloud
