VCU Libraries has approximately 1000 volumes published before 1820. Most items are in English and were published in what is now the United States or Great Britain, and the majority of imprints are from the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. All items are available for use in the reading rooms of Special Collections & Archives in the Cabell and Health Sciences Libraries.
Strengths of the collection include works by and about Samuel Johnson, including several editions of the dictionary and James Boswell's biography, and works in the history of medicine, especially works used or collected by faculty of the Medical College of Virginia.
