VCU Libraries' digital collections provide free online access to written works, images, and audiovisual materials for VCUL collections alongside those of our community partners. All these materials are freely accessible, and we encourage the use of these materials in your class.
VCU Libraries digital collections materials and exhibits can be found via:
Digital Collections on Scholars Compass
VCU Libraries Gallery
Digital Collections Exhibits
The library also offers several subject-specific digital collections resources:
Social Welfare History Project & Image Portal
Mapping the Second Ku Klux Klan, 1915-1940
James Branch Cabell: Literary Life and Legacy
Freedom Now Project
In addition to being freely accessible, many collections are also openly licensed, allowing for the reuse and redistribution of those collections in accordance with the license terms. These open licenses allow for digital collections materials to be used in the creation of open educational resources. If you have questions about licensing or about using digital collections materials in open educational resources, please reach out to the Open Educational Resources Librarian, Abbey Childs.
Anyone may suggest collections for digitization and dissemination. Materials are typically digitized from the Libraries’ collection, often drawn from Special Collections and Archives. If you’re interested in a particular set of materials in Special Collections and Archives, or if you and/or your students have created unique materials (i.e. oral histories, magazines, creative works) that you would like to archive and make accessible, the Digital Libraries & Publishing department can work with you on creating a digital collection. To discuss creating a digital collection, please reach out to the Digital Initiatives Librarian, Irina Rogova.
