ICPSR (Inter-University Consortium for Political and Social Research)

What is ICPSR?

The VCU Libraries membership in ICPSR enables faculty, students, and staff across the social, behavioral, and medical sciences to download and analyze data relevant to:

  • arts and culture, college athletics
  • criminal justice, economics, education, gerontology, immigration
  • health care, hospitals, LGBT health, mental health, medical expenditures
  • political science, psychology, social work, sociology
  • substance abuse, terrorism, and more.

Statistical Software

To analyze ICPSR data you need statistical software e.g., SASSPSS, or STATA. All can be downloaded free of charge from VCU Technology Services, which also offers free statistical consulting (by appointment).

NOTE: Many ICPSR datasets are SDA enabled, meaning you can Analyze Data Online without SAS, SPSS, or Stata!

To Download Data

Before you can download a data set, you will be prompted to create a MyData Account. This account serves as a secondary method of membership authentication and provides some personalization options. You must use a valid VCU e-mail address as your user ID (jdoe@vcu.edu or jdoe@mcvh-vcu.edu).
