Data Collections

Currently, there is no one-stop shop for scientific data. Instead, finding data is a two step process:

Find out which collection or repository has the kind of data you seek

Published articles may include information about where the data was deposited
Directories of repositories (below) can point to repositories where data on a topic can be found

Look in those collections for the data itself.

Here are some directories of repositories.

Data.Gov
Portal to help locate data collected by the U.S. government on a range of topics. Can be used to access data directly or to determine which agencies collect data on a topic.
Databib
Databib is a directory of over 600 data repositories. It's multidisciplinary, covering sciences and social sciences. Because it's a directory, it is useful for locating a place where data on your topic might be found rather than for accessing the data itself.
DataMed
DataMed is a biomedical data search engine. Its goal is to discover data sets across data repositories or data aggregators. In the future it will allow searching outside these boundaries. DataMed supports the NIH-endorsed FAIR principles of Findability, Accessibility, Interoperability and Reusability of datasets with current functionality assisting in finding datasets and providing access information about them.
NIH Data Sharing Repositories
A list of data repositories sponsored or supported by the National Institutes of Health (NIH), including genetic data and disease research data.
DataONE data search
A cross-repository search tool to locate data, primarily biological and environmental, in any of about twenty different "Nodes" where the data are kept.
Public Data Sets on Amazon Web Services
Public Data Sets on Amazon Web Services (AWS) is a repository of public data sets that can be seamlessly integrated into AWS cloud-based applications. Data sets are there for no charge, but users pay only for the compute and storage they use for their own applications on Amazon's machines. Often gives links to the same data sets hosted on other sites.
re3data.org Registry of Research Data Repositories
Registry of Research Data Repositories with a goal of creating a global registry of data repositories from different academic areas. It includes both open and restricted access repositories and has icons to indicate such features. As of March 2014, it has about 600 repositories listed, with some overlap with Databib.
