Medical records and clinical data

Medical research data is held under the highest confidentiality and requires robust deidentification, detailed data use agreements, or both before you can access it. VCU has two options (for VCU affiliates only) for de-identified clinical research. Keep in mind that even deidentified medical research data should be handled with respect! Furthermore, large recordsets like these are complex to work with. THerefore, either of these options will require you to go through training in using the data after requesting access

Option 1: TriNetX

  • What it is:   a fully de-identified large, refreshed sub-set of the VCUHS EMR
  • Why use it:  estimate feasibility; explore conditions; access large anonymized datasets for research; queries in TriNetX are valuable exploratory approaches to justify more complex data request pathways
  • How to get started: sign up for access and participate in training (est. time = 1 day)

Option 2: National Institutes of Health’s All Of Us Research Program

  • What it is: The All of Us Research Hub stores health data from a diverse group of participants from across the United States.
  • Why use it: A national participant pool with linked health records, genomic data, social determinants surveys, and health access information
  • How to get started: Researchers at approved institutions like VCU can register for access using their Login.gov account and participate in training to gain access. VCU has an institutional Data Use and Registration Agreement (DURA) in place with the All of Us research program.
