Mission Statement

The Collections Care Unit at VCU Libraries, in the Collection Analysis and Investment Department, is responsible for assisting in the long and short term care of select circulating and special collections in various formats held in Cabell Library, the Health Sciences Library, and storage facilities (physical and digital). Ongoing care, outreach, and planning are necessary in order to maintain that our collections are in good condition so that they will remain accessible for present and future users. Reducing deterioration of our collections is accomplished with people across the libraries and communities through shared efforts  like:

  • In-House Repair
  • Data Analysis and Surveys
  • Commercial Library Binding
  • Reformatting
  • Conservation Treatment
  • Digital Preservation
  • Emergency Preparedness and Response
  • Transparent Documentation and Metadata
  • Security
  • Intentional Storage and Handling
  • Environmental Monitoring
  • Education, Outreach, and Collaboration with Community Members

Some of these categories are described further here: NEDCC Introduction to Preservation. https://www.nedcc.org/preservation101/session-1/1what-is-preservation

Our focus is on implementing new networks and systems of accountability as a community for making collections safe and accessible, as well as encouraging a healthy workplace.
