Family Medicine Preceptors

The Department of Family Medicine was established in 1970 by the governor and General Assembly of the commonwealth and charged with the mission of preparing competent family physicians for the people of Virginia, while contributing to the knowledge that improves the quality of care they receive.

The Society was founded in 1967 to respond to the needs of family medicine educators. From a small beginning of 105 founding members, they have grown to a membership of nearly 5,000 teachers of family medicine. These teachers include medical school professors, preceptors, residency program faculty, residency program directors and all involved in family medicine education.

The North American Primary Care Research Group (NAPCRG) is a multidisciplinary organization for primary care researchers. Founded in 1972 and oriented to family medicine, NAPCRG welcomes members from all primary care generalist disciplines and related fields, including epidemiology, behavioral sciences, and health services research.

Virginia’s State Office of Rural Health (VA-SORH) is housed in the Virginia Department of Health (VDH) Office of Minority Health and Public Health Policy (OMHPHP) Division of Primary Care and Rural Health. Federally funded since 1991, the purpose of this Office is to strengthen rural health care delivery systems by maintaining a focal point for rural health

Founded in 1993, the Virginia Association of Free Clinics (VAFC) is the nation's oldest Free Clinic association. The VAFC represents and supports Virginia's network of 59 Free Clinics, which are one of Virginia's largest providers of health care to the uninsured.

The Virginia Community Healthcare Association’s mission is to assure that all Virginians, regardless of geographic location or income, have access to appropriate and affordable primary health care. The Association also is the statewide association for Virginia’s community health centers (CHC's) and similar organizations.

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ) is the lead Federal agency charged with improving the quality, safety, efficiency, and effectiveness in healthcare.
