Graphic Novel Selected for VCU's 2023-2024 Common Book

"Seek You: A Journey Through American Loneliness" has been selected as the next VCU Common Book for the 2023-2024 academic year. Author, Kristen Radtke, explores loneliness in America as a 'silent epidemic' as well as solutions for connecting with one another. In the News

"Zine exhibit explores wellness themes and creative expressions from the pandemic"

“Zines from the Pandemic and Beyond,” an exhibit on view on the fourth floor of James Branch Cabell Library, explores the personal and the universal themes expressed in zines. The exhibit features zines and artists’ books from VCU Libraries Special Collections and Archives’ holdings that explore themes of health, activism and creative expression. Many items featured were created in the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Dr. Shirlene Obuobi 

Is a Ghanaian-American physician, cartoonist, and author, who creates online comics about "the general experiences of healthcare professionals, commentary on existing healthcare disparities, and larger issues in healthcare, such as the persistence of structural racism" (see more on this Graphic Medicine blog post). Dr. Obuobi is a Graphic Medicine Liaison and publishes her comics on her website, Instagram, and Facebook pages. 

 

What is Graphic Medicine?

Graphic Medicine is a concept and practice through which practitioners and patients can use comic arts to communicate complex ideas and health-related experiences. This guide is designed for those wanting to learn more about graphic medicine scholarship and projects, as well as VCU resources related to Graphic Medicine
