What is Evidence-Based Practice?

Evidence-based practice (EBP) is:

"...the integration of the best research evidence with your clinical expertise / expertise and your patient's values, preferences, concerns, and rights."

Six steps in EBP:

  1. Assess - your patient
  2. Ask - an answerable clinical question
  3. Acquire - the best evidence
  4. Appraise - the evidence
  5. Apply - the evidence to patient care
  6. Evaluate - the patient's outcomes and your own performance

Information that has not been critically appraised is considered "unfiltered".

Look for evidence at the top of the pyramid and work your way down to the best available evidence.
