Check with the institution to see if people who are not students or employees may borrow materials. For example, the University of Virginia allows Virginia residents with a valid driver's license to borrow materials.

VCU Libraries

Registered alumni may borrow books, CDs, and DVDs. Register on the VCU Alumni site. This page outlines borrowing privileges for Community and Friends of VCU Libraries, which includes Alumni.

Community Colleges

Virginia residents age 16 and older can obtain a borrowing card at their local community college. A photo ID, such as a Virginia driver's license, is required.

Public Libraries

Library of Virginia offers borrowing privileges to any resident of Virginia. Photo identification, proof of residence, and current address are required. Online and mail registrations are available.

Public libraries offer borrowing privileges to anyone living in their region. Some of the resources available through your local public library may include:

  • Ebooks that can be downloaded to your ereader or tablet
  • Access to popular magazines via your ereader or tablet
  • DVDs and music
  • Research databases
  • Comfortable facilities to read or study
  • Community events and programming
