Student Development

The Graduate School at VCU offers several opportunities to obtain professional development while pursuing a graduate career.  These include: 

  • The Preparing Future Faculty Program: a series of short courses and professional development opportunities for graduate students interested in pursuing careers in higher education.

  • The Leaders and Entrepreneurs AcademyLEAPD is a companion to the Preparing Future Faculty Program, that offers a series of short courses and experiences to assist graduate students seeking careers in industry, nonprofit organizations, health care, public service and government.

  • Mentorship Program: a program that matches undergraduate students with mentors who are graduate students as they make decisions about post-baccalaureate study and transition from undergraduate to graduate student status.

Professional Development Resources for Students

The National Research Mentoring Network provides mentoring resources for faculty and students at any stage of their career.  Start here to find resources about how to be a good mentor, how to find great mentees, and utilize the NRMN network to connect with colleagues and find a mentor for yourself!

VCU provides premium access to The Chronicle for Higher Education, the nation's largest newsroom dedicated to covering colleges and universities.  This side provides news, insights, essential tools, career opportunities and the knowledge to succeed in a rapidly evolving academic world.

The Burroughs Wellcome Fund provides career resources for investigators at multiple stages of their careers.

Outside of VCU, there are additional resources geared towards graduate students who are looking to thrive in their chosen career.  These include:
